This town is widely regarded by many folks in Alberta as a rather northern town within the province. However, upon observing the North-South median line on an Alberta map, one would note that Athabasca is just a few kilometers north of said line, although it sits approximately 150 km east of the province's geographical midpoint. Nestled in the Athabasca River valley, this town lies about 150 km north of Edmonton and serves as the county seat for Athabasca County, catering to a number of local farmers.

The town's primary employer happens to be Athabasca University, the main distance learning institution in Alberta. The university's campus in town also offers select on-site courses and training opportunities. Despite the breathtaking beauty of the Athabasca River valley, winter temperatures in the area can plummet to quite chilly levels, even for this region of the province. The winters, particularly in the river valley, can be remarkably frosty, yet living here is a matter of personal preference.

However, the delightfully long summer days and convenient access to several nearby lakes serve as definite highlights of this community, complemented by its charming setting and quality schools.

Athabasca is a wonderful town, mate. It's got a strong farming community that’s been keeping it thriving for years. However, some locals reckon the town council has been giving too much attention to the University. They've shut down some farm stores and instead brought in a bunch of liquor and marijuana shops. Quite the change, if you ask me!
